Producing
"An actual live example
As a primer to its activities, the institute while in infancy brought together 5 scientists from different Jordanian universities along with some local manufactures of diagnostic reagents to discuss the possibility of establishing a private sector company that specializes in the production of cell lines, hybridomas, polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies for marketing in Jordan and elsewhere.
Procedural Steps followed:
- The group convened for a number of times at the HCST brainstorming and discussing the various facets of the intended project. Top ranking officials from the council met with them a number of times to help them focus and finalize the idea.
- The council then asked them to prepare a rough outline preliminary proposal stating the main idea of the project, the rational behind establishing the company, its general feasibility, a preliminary outline of the firm in terms of equipment, space, location, products, market etc. This is addition to a rough cost estimate of the project as a whole.
- The preliminary proposal was discussed, modified and developed into a final proposal following 2 additional meetings at the HCST.
- The council then commissioned and financially funded a comprehensive feasibility study of the project. The feasibility study, which targeted the technical, financial and market aspects of the project, was conducted over a period of 6 weeks.
- The council then asked a specialized firm (.) to evaluate the feasibility study and to propose a solid business plan for execution of the project. A detailed feasibility study was performed and showed that the project was very feasible.
- Currently, the group, with the help of the council, is looking for ways of financing the project and translating what started as an idea into an up and running manufacturing facility.
Investments were obtained from the Royal Scientific Society, the Higher Council, some universities, the scientists and the main importer of of monoclonal antibodies.. The company was registered and is actively starting operations.
Synthesis:
The above example roughly illustrates how the institute intends to foster and nurture novel ideas with the ultimate goal of moving biotechnology from the bench top all the way to the market place. Scientists who fear the business world may not have a place at the institute or, for that matter, the market. Those who are welling to venture and put their money where their tongue is are most welcome. The institute is very welling to help and support them as long as they have the right idea, the stamina to persevere and the long breath to translate their knowledge into products, which will ultimately benefit them in the first place but will also boost the national economy and lower the technological barriers between the developed and the developing worlds.
Other meetings are actively held with other groups of scientists to try to identify other feasible projects in Biotechnology.Several new projects are in the pipeline. |
